Zander Blom (b. 1982) is a prominent South African contemporary artist celebrated for his bold and experimental paintings. Born in Pretoria, he initially studied Information Design at the University of Pretoria but left to pursue his passion for art. Blom quickly established himself as an independent artist, producing early works in printmaking and video before focusing on painting.
Blom’s work is deeply influenced by 20th-century modernism, drawing inspiration from artists such as Piet Mondrian and Francis Bacon. His practice challenges the conventions of painting while paying homage to its traditions. Working primarily in oils on unprimed Belgian linen, Blom employs an innovative approach, using repurposed tools and objects to create gestural, textured compositions. His artworks are distinguished by their rich impasto surfaces and striking, abstract forms.
Blom has exhibited widely both in South Africa and internationally. His work has been featured at leading institutions such as the Norval Foundation and the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, as well as Galerie Hans Mayer in Düsseldorf. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at Stevenson galleries in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Blom’s contributions to contemporary art have been documented in two catalogue raisonnés, Paintings Volume I (2013) and Volume II (2016). His work is also included in Phaidon’s Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting (2016), a key anthology on contemporary painting.
Currently based in Cape Town, Blom remains a significant figure in the global art scene, known for his innovate techniques and dynamic exploration of abstraction.
