LANGA, MOSHEKWA

Langa Moshekwa (b. 1975) is a South African artist known for his exploration of identity, displacement, and memory through various media. Born in Bakenberg, South Africa, he has gained international recognition since the late 1990s, participating in significant exhibitions, including the Johannesburg, Istanbul, and Venice Biennales.

Moshekwa studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he has lived since 1997. His work often addresses themes of colonialism and cultural context, particularly reflecting on his experiences as a South African in the Netherlands. He employs a diverse range of materials, such as tape, tar, and sandpaper, in his mixed media pieces, emphasising the artistic process over final outcomes.

His solo exhibitions include notable shows at the Renaissance Society in Chicago and Kunsthalle Bern, engaging critically with the legacies of colonsation and the complexities of identity and landscape.
