MACHONA, GERALD

Gerald Machona (b. 1986) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist whose work addresses themes of migration, social interaction, and xenophobia in South Africa. His practice spans various mediums, including sculpture, video, photography, performance, and installation. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Art specializing in New Media from the University of Cape Town in 2009, Machona completed a Master’s degree in Fine Art with a focus on sculpture at Rhodes University in 2013, supported by a scholarship.

Machona has exhibited in numerous group shows, including "US II" at the Iziko South African National Gallery, and was recognized as one of South Africa’s top 10 emerging African artists by Business Day during the 2011 Johannesburg Art Fair. He is also a recipient of the Mellon Foundation Scholarship and has conducted research for the Visual and Performing Arts of Africa research team. Currently pursuing a PhD in Fine Art at UCT, Machona’s research explores the intersection of art, performance, and heritage, particularly concerning the African diaspora.
