MARX, GERHARD

Gerard Marx has a BAFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, and an MAFA (Cum Laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Marx’s work is primarily concerned with the development of original drawing and sculptural techniques, in which the technique, and the actual process of making carry particular conceptual and philosophical associations. Each technique opens a field of exploration, enabling something of a language that Marx uses and explores to its full poetic and philosophical potential.

The artist has exhibited widely in South Africa and overseas including his seventh solo exhibition, A Geometry of Echoes, at the Goodman Gallery, Cape Town, in 2015/2016, and Imaginary Fact: South African Art and the Archive, at the South African Pavillion, 55th Venice Bienale, Italy, in 2013. Marx’s work is regularly shown at international Art Fairs, including Art Basel, Frieze (London and NY) and FIAC (Paris) and features in numerous public and private art collections. Public sculptures include Vertical Aerial: JHB, Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, The Fire Walker (in collaboration with William Kentridge), Queen Elizabeth Bridge, Johannesburg, and Paper Pigeon (in collaboration with Maja Marx), Pigeon Square, Johannesburg.
