Joshua Miles (b. 1967, Western Cape, South Africa) completed his early schooling in Swellendam and high school in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. He later studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, where he was awarded the Michaelis Prize for best student in his final year.
Miles is one of the rare artists who has managed to make a living solely from his art. Initially working with oils on canvas, his passion has always been reduction block printmaking. His early influences in printmaking came from watching his aunt, Elsa Miles, an artist and art historian, and later studying under Cecil Scotness at UCT. Miles is inspired by the play of light on landscapes, often seeking out softer light that reveals subtle tones most would overlook. His work is also influenced by the Impressionist style of loose mark-making and the Japanese tradition of printmaking. After UCT, Joshua moved to Hermanus, where he met his Scottish wife, Angela. They have been married for over 20 years, living and working between South Africa and Scotland, and together they manage the business of selling Miles' art.
