NHLENGETHWA, JABULANI SAM

Sam Nhlengethwa (b. 1955, Payneville, Springs) is a celebrated South African artist known for his mixed-media collages and vibrant depictions of urban life, jazz, and South Africa's socio-political landscape. After studying at Rorke's Drift Art Centre in the late 1970s, Nhlengethwa developed a unique style that combines painting, printmaking, and collage, often incorporating found materials and references to art history. Nhlengethwa’s art has been exhibited both locally and internationally, with notable shows at institutions such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Standard Bank Gallery. He has also participated in several biennales, including the Venice Biennale. Nhlengethwa was the recipient of the 1994 Standard Bank Young Artist Award and remains a pivotal figure in contemporary South African art. His works are part of prestigious collections, including the South African National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Throughout his career, he has maintained a strong connection to his community, mentoring young artists and reflecting the realities of South African life in his work.
