OLTMANN, WALTER

Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) is a South African artist renowned for his intricate wire sculptures and installations that blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary themes. Born in KwaZulu-Natal, Oltmann draws inspiration from African art forms, particularly weaving and wire work, to create compelling three-dimensional "drawings."

His work often explores themes of nature and human experience, with pieces that range from delicate representations of insects to large-scale installations. Oltmann's "caterpillar suits" exemplify his unique approach, merging the forms of insects with historical references, inviting viewers to reflect on cultural and natural narratives.

Oltmann has exhibited extensively, both locally and internationally, and is recognised for his innovative contributions to the art world, pushing the boundaries of scale and material.
