Gunther Friedrich Julius van der Reis (1927–2021) was a South African artist known for his creative and experimental art. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and moved to South Africa with his family in 1937 to escape the challenges of Nazi Germany. Growing up in South Africa, he developed a deep love for nature, which became a big inspiration for his work.
Gunther studied art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town and later earned a master’s degree at the University of Pretoria. After working as an art teacher for many years, he decided to focus fully on creating art in 1988. He became known for using different materials like oils, epoxy, and acrylics to make unique and textured paintings.
One of his most famous works, Phoenix Rising (1987), shows his talent for blending materials and ideas. His art often explored themes of change and growth, using bright colors and interesting textures to capture emotion and movement.
Gunther’s work was displayed in galleries across South Africa and became part of important collections, showing his influence in the art world. His art not only reflects his love for South Africa but also leaves behind a legacy of creativity and innovation. He passed away in 2021, but his work continues to inspire others.
