uMfazi by Ennock Mlangeni was initially created to comment on the changing traditional roles women are expected to fulfill once they're married and become wives. The artist used newspaper as a common household item, the manner in which is it used, speaks to how women in the past were expected to take care of the household, a role which restricted them in their desire to be financially independent.
After hosting our private walkabout, the woman depicted in this artwork now represents strength, resilience and pride. Our viewers noted that her eyes carry no sorrow but a sense of determination to occupy space and be respected as uMfazi.
