ARNOLD, MARION

Dr. Marion Arnold (b. 1947) is an artist, author, and art historian. Born in the United Kingdom and raised in Zimbabwe, she completed her studies in South Africa, including her PhD. Alongside her artistic practice and writing career, Arnold has lectured at various institutions in South Africa and abroad. She currently lives and works in the United Kingdom, where she holds a lectureship at Loughborough University’s School of the Arts.

Arnold's practice encompasses a variety of media, including oil paint, watercolour, pastel, and print. Her style is characterised by simplified forms, an expressive use of bright, playful colours, and distinct patterning. Much of her work reflects her interest in and concern for the environment, with the Matopo Hills in Motobo National Park, Zimbabwe, serving as a significant source of inspiration. A recurring motif in her oeuvre is the Park’s famous balancing rock formations.

Her works are held in collections throughout South Africa, including the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch and the UCT Works of Art Collection (WOAC) in Cape Town. Among her many publications are the monograph Irma Stern: A Feast for the Eye (1995) and Women and Art in South Africa (1996).
