MJ Lourens (b. 1973, Pretoria, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and film. He studied Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Pretoria from 1992 to 1996. Known for his atmospheric landscapes, Lourens’ work reflects themes of space, environment, and human interaction with the natural world. He has exhibited widely in South Africa, holding solo shows at prominent galleries like Everard Read and Barnard Gallery.
In addition to his visual art, Lourens is an accomplished filmmaker, with several of his films—DIE RIT (2009), PROGNOSE (2008), and PA (2006)—being screened at international festivals. His artwork is held in prestigious collections, including the South African Reserve Bank, Nando’s UK, and Telkom SA.
Lourens currently lives and works in Cape Town.
