Semi Lubisi (b.1980) is a self-taught artist based in Johannesburg, originally from Tembisa township. His art is deeply influenced by the vibrant township life, reflecting his connection to his community. Lubisi's work is distinguished by the dominance of township ambience, brought to life through the use of charcoal, watercolours, and acrylics on paper. His art captures the daily lives of ordinary people, often focusing on children, who symbolize innocence, freedom, and pure souls. His artistic style features firm charcoal strokes softened by shades that are contrasted with bright colours, creating a vibrant yet simple vividness. These compositions not only tell stories but also raise awareness of social issues affecting township communities, inviting the audience to feel and reflect on these experiences. Lubisi's passion for art began in primary school, where he would draw cartoon characters in his schoolbooks. The challenges he faced growing up fuelled his determination to develop his artistic skills. "I grow every day from every stroke & critique, one just never stops learning" - Semi Lubisi.
